The Kaftan. The Ultimate Summer Cover Up

When I was about half the age I am now, my boyfriend at the time took me to see some friends of his, a couple who lived in a rather glamorous, rather Bohemian house in deepest Surrey. We were greeted at the door by the lady of the house, an ex model, who was insouciantly wearing a transparent floating ethereal kaftan…. with nothing underneath. This was probably the most disconcerting introduction to someone that I have ever encountered. She was obviously of the “if you’ve got it flaunt it” variety.

Seriously stylish, a kaftan covers up lumps and bumps and makes you feel confident. And, far from looking like a marquee, a well designed kaftan will enhance your silhouette. They often have a plunging neckline and side slits, so can look very sexy.  A floor length version adorned with some stand-out jewellery is perfect for evening wear. Choose a floaty style or one made from fine cotton and you have the perfect beach cover up.

Short kaftans work really well as a pretty cover up over a sleeveless tee shirt/trousers or a plain sleeveless dress, successfully covering upper arms.
