It’s that time of year when OH (Other Half) and I love to hunker down with a good boxset. We have recently found two new TV series, quite by accident, which we really enjoyed.
The Loudest Voice
The Loudest Voice tells the story of Roger Ailes, who molded Fox News into one of the most powerful, influential media networks in history. The series focuses primarily on the past decade in which Ailes became one of the most prominent figures in modern American conservatism, while flashing back to defining events in Ailes’ life, including the 9/11 attacks, the 2008 and 2016 elections, and the sexual harassment accusations and settlements that ended his career.
Russell Crowe plays Roger Ailes and is unrecognisable and brilliant. Sienna Miller plays his wife, Beth and apart from her dodgy wigs she is excellent. Simon McBurney, an English actor, plays Rupert Murdoch better than Rupert would have played himself.
It is a very topical new TV series as we see the birth of ‘fake news’ and how damaging it can be with its ripple effect. We also see the power that Roger Ailes and Fox News had over the election of Donald Trump.
Watch this series if you want confirmed all that is bad about modern day news coverage and politics. The last 5 minutes when they tell you where all the characters are now is very chilling……
The Spy
This new TV series is on Netflix and it is a true-life spy story. Sacha Baron Cohen stars and delivers his best dramatic work yet.
The Spy is a six-part, roughly six-hour series based on the work of real-life Mossad agent Eli Cohen, who went undercover in Syria in the early 1960s. At a crucial time, Cohen got in deeper and was more successful than anyone ever expected, ultimately becoming Israel’s most famous spy (there are at least two books about him).
If you love spy-thrillers then this is one for you. OH and I were gripped.
