A few make-up tips and shortcuts

This article was written for Annabel & Grace, which is now part of Rest Less.

We are all in a hurry but when we do take the time to apply our face make up it makes all the difference and if applied well we do not need to do much touching-up during the day. However I am always keen to learn new time saving make up tips and shortcuts that will make my life easier and my face more presentable! Here are a few that I have gleaned over the years that I have not already mentioned on CW.

Burt’s Bees Micellar Cleansing Water: This is a wonderful cleanser and a little goes a long way plus it is kind to your wallet – £9.19 (on Amazon) for over 350ml. It will make your skincare regimen a breeze as it is a 3 in 1 product. Burt’s Bees Micellar Cleansing Water is formulated with Australian White Cypress oil and honey extract to gently remove lingering makeup, gently cleanse away pore-clogging dirt and oil while nourishing your skin. The 3 in 1 Micellar water is easy to use – simply soak a cotton pad and wipe away dirt, oil and makeup without harsh rubbing or rinsing. However the best bit is I use this for one of my make up tricks that I was taught by a make-up artist. If you have smudged your eye make-up, or accidentally knocked your mascara wand so there are some black spots in unwanted places then just dip a cotton bud gently into your bottle of Burt’s Bees Micellar Cleansing Water and dab the smudge away.

Having mentioned cotton buds the Muji Cotton buds are my favourite for mopping up make-up mistakes. These thin cotton buds from Muji are made with 100% cotton and have a supple paper shaft that avoids using plastic so they are environmentally friendly. They are sanitary due to chitosan antibacterial processing. The thinness with the pointed tip makes them perfect for removing any excess of eyeliner or lipliner. I take them everywhere – I pop a few in a little pouch to keep in my handbag and I always take them on holiday as hot skin tends to make cosmetics run a little.

Recently I came across these make-up tutorials by Caroline Barnes, a celebrated London make-up artist, which are full of make up tips. She has worked in the industry for over 20 years, and is at the top of her profession. This particular video caught my eye as I have been noticing that my dark circles are far more apparent as I get older. The skin under one’s eyes gets thinner as you get older so the blue shows more. I love By Terry products so I am happy to use their concealer but to be honest I was most interested with the method of applying under eye concealer so I used the one I already had.  The charcoal tissue paper for blotting is a really good trick and it has made all the difference to my under eye look. It now takes me seconds to apply my under eye make-up. To buy Charcoal Blotting papers

Note that Caroline also uses Micellar water with a cotton bud to take away any excess oil that you have around your eye area during the day.
